The Loire Valley is France's longest and most diverse wine région, stretching nearly 1,000 kilometres from the volcanic soils of the Auvergne to the Atlantic coast near Nantes. It is nicknamed the Garden of France, and its wines reflect that richness: whites, reds, roses, sparkling wines and some of the world's finest sweet wines all come from this single ribbon of river and vineyard. Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Muscadet and Cabernet Franc are the stars, each expressing the Loire's characteristic freshness and minerality.
Whites: Sancerre, Muscadet and Vouvray
Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are the Loire's most celebrated whites — Sauvignon Blanc at its most précise, with flint minerality, citrus and a clean, appetite-whetting finish. They remain the benchmark pairing for oysters and fresh goat cheese. Further west, Vouvray showcases Chenin Blanc in every style from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, with a honeyed richness and vibrant acidity that allows the best bottles to age for decades. Muscadet, from near the Atlantic coast, is lean, salty and brilliant with seafood — one of France's most underrated and underpriced wines.
Reds and Sparkling: Chinon, Bourgueil and Crémant
Chinon and Bourgueil bring Cabernet Franc to its finest expression in the Loire — wines of silky texture, red berry fruit and a distinctive pencil-shaving earthiness. They are lighter than Bordeaux reds and work superbly with poultry, pork and charcuterie. For sparkling, the Loire's Crémant de Loire offers excellent quality at roughly half the price of Champagne, using the traditional method on Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. And at the sweet end of the spectrum, Coteaux du Layon and Bonnezeaux produce botrytised Chenin Blanc with astonishing concentration — perfect with foie gras or blue cheese.
